This note is about an esthetic challenge in two adjacent zirconia crowns. What made me write up this case was the fast, creative solution I used to fix the color mismatch caused by the two different underlying substrates.

Clinical Explanation
When two zirconia crowns sit side by side and one is on an implant while the other is on a natural tooth, the abutment's shadow can become a real problem and make the colors read differently — in this case, with a creative, out-of-the-box chairside solution, I resolved the color mismatch caused by the dark abutment without involving the lab. -
The Problem
I had a patient who needed crowns for both central incisors. One central was an implant, and the adjacent central was a natural tooth with plenty of remaining tooth structure (in fact it was just a simple crown replacement — no post and core involved).
The lab had made two monolithic zirconia crowns. When I tried the two crowns in the patient's mouth, I noticed a clear color difference. The reason was obvious: the crown seated on the implant had taken on a color different from the crown on the natural tooth, because of the dark abutment underneath it. Given the severe time constraint I was under in that session, sending the case back to the lab wasn't an option, and I had to find a solution right then and there. -
What I Did
An idea occurred to me: if I could darken the inner surface of the natural-tooth crown a little, maybe I could "match" it to the implant crown.
I picked up a sterile pencil and slightly darkened the intaglio surface of the natural-tooth zirconia crown, in the zone corresponding to the implant abutment — something like an improvised, hand-done staining.
When I tried the crowns in again, the result was excellent. The problem was completely solved, and both restorations came out visually matched and in perfect harmony. -
Why This Wasn't a Clinical Problem
The reason I felt comfortable doing this was that these crowns were going to be cemented conventionally and permanently. Since we didn't need resin cement or sensitive bonding protocols, darkening the intaglio surface with a pencil created neither a microleakage risk nor any interference with bonding. -
In This Case, and the Bottom Line
Scientifically and ideally, of course, it's far better in cases like this to build the crown with proper layering, or to use professional internal staining in the lab.
The approach I used in this case was on a monolithic restoration, and it was simply a trick that worked fast under that tight time constraint. I wouldn't recommend it as a routine clinical protocol, but as an "emergency idea" and a piece of out-of-the-box thinking, it's worth keeping in the back of your mind in case you ever find yourself stuck in a similar situation.
