Insight 98 — A Simple Trick for Easier Shade Selection
One of the most important factors in tooth shade selection is Value—how light or dark the shade is.
Sometimes we hesitate between two shades and cannot tell which is closer to the tooth in lightness and darkness.
A simple trick is to place the shade tabs next to the tooth and photograph them. Then convert the photo to black and white on the phone.
Comparison then becomes much easier. Whichever shade looks closer to the tooth in lightness and darkness in the grayscale photo likely has the closer Value.
One important caveat: use a simple grayscale conversion, not artistic filters that change brightness and contrast.
Of course, this trick is only for comparing Value and does not by itself mean final shade selection.
